He's Not Claiming Her

You don’t want a relationship.  You want your time.  To be young.  To be new.  There are a lot of women to meet in DC– even more to see.  There are bachatas to be danced, drinks to be bought; there may even be numbers to be exchanged.  There is time.  To be young.  To be new.  So no rush, right?  No relationship.  Maybe later.  Maybe after a “we’ll see where this goes.”

So don’t invite her out with the group.  Don’t bring her out to the club with you.  You didn’t stand next to her, no… didn’t ask her to stand next to you, either.  But there she is.  And now someone’s snapping a photo of the two of you, flash on.  She’s gonna post it on Instagram– what will she caption it?  What will we learn?  Now she’s talking with your boy’s girl, the one he introduces to people as his girlfriend.  Looks like she’s giving you your space, it’s girl time.  Except now they’re getting drinks and now they’re dancing and on the ride home, after you guys drop her off at her apartment, your boy’s novia is gonna tell you how much she likes that girl you brought to the club tonight, she’s cute, while she's commenting on the Instagram pic of you two with that emoji that has hearts for eyes.

And you do this again.  A few more times, possibly even several.  Not with any other chicks, though.  Are you even trying to get at any other women at this point?  You may be at the club without her tonight, but we know her now.  She’s the only one.  Shit, last time she came out, y’all were arguing in the hall by the bathroom.  Bro.  It’s all over.  You’re in the relationship you told her you didn’t want.  Don’t just stand there with your drink looking at me like that.  I don’t feel bad for you and your “overbearing woman.”  She may have wormed her way in, but you found your way to worm out of addressing what was happening.  So who's the bigger gusano?  People are watching, dude.  You know they're saying son, he bitched out, so maybe tonight while she's gone you get loaded, spit some game at a few chicks at the bar, leave sweaty and borracho.  Then maybe everyone's gonna say damn, that's sad, he's still not claiming her.  Silly girl.  When is she gonna realize.  It's fucked up, dude.  And who knows what you're thinking as you take the last swig, finish your first Corona; but now you're just standing there.  And we’re all standing here like soooo... dónde está tu novia?

Yes

by David Brooks

You know how
just before we die
our whole life is supposed
to flash before our eyes?
Well, should that happen, we’d surely have,
while it is flashing,
to come to that moment when our whole life
flashes before our eyes,
and while that was happening
all over again, we’d come again
to that same moment, and so on,
which is only to say that, while I know
this might not have been good enough for Zeno
and that it’s a certainty
that death happens anyway, for that one
minute, when that thought came
and I imagined
living this life
over and over,
I said to myself, despite
all the effort, all the
pain of it,
despite
all that has happened
and is likely to
again and again,
Yes, I thought, as I was watching you
getting ready for bed tonight,
Yes, though I knew
even then
it was crazy beyond measure,
Yes, I would, Yes,
Please, Yes.
